One of the newest features added to the latest revision of the Apple iPhone operating system that is quickly catching onto business travelers, is the ability to save a web page icon directly on the desktop of their iPhone.  And while most of the icons for websites currently are only small snapshots of the websites main page, Rathbun’s has taken it one step further.

How?  If an iPhone owner wants to save one of Rathbun’s restaurants as a bookmark, they can automatically download a custom iPhone icon with one of Rathbun’s logos on it.  So the next time the iPhone owner wants to go to Rathbun’s website, all they have to do is select Rathbun’s iPhone icon and it takes the user directly to the website.

How does this benefit the restaurant and the iPhone user?  It assists the end user who could be the business traveler, the local resident, or a regular diner with viewing the restaurant menu immediately and on the palm of their hand. It also allows the iPhone user to create their very own bookmarks on their iPhones base screen.  They do not even have to punch in the website address. They select Rathbun’s icon, and they are on the website.

How is it done?  Cliff Bramble, one of the partners of Rathbun’s, Kevin Rathbun Steak and Krog Bar researched the information to create the icon and they created a small 45x45 pixel icon and added it to the root directory of their website. The software within the iPhone automatically searched for a specific name of a .png file and uses that image as their iPhone icon.  Then, the iPhone itself automatically rounds off the corners and adds a glassy reflection on the top half of the icon to make it more three-dimensional.
